With the holiday season officially underway, now is a great time to focus on good deeds and giving back to your community. Due to seasonal lay offs and the throes of unfortunate events, many families tend to struggle more during the holidays than they do during any other time of the year. Many organizations dedicate their time to raising funds, organizing toy drives, and donating food to families in need of additional help during this time of year. Some of you may be asking yourselves, “How do I find people in need in my community and how can I be a blessing to them in my own little way?”

The AARP Create the Good database of volunteer opportunities is a great place to start. At CreateTheGood.Org, you can search for different opportunities and organizations that are working to help families in need in your community. Whether you have 5 minutes to contribute to a cause or 5 hours, Create the Good can help you find opportunities in your community that fit your schedule. In addition to the volunteer database, Create the Good also features DIY project guides, ideas and inspiration to lending a helping hand.

In the 25 Days, 25 Ways to Give challenge, AARP’s Create the Good challenges us to actively spread holiday cheer simply by completing the daily missions posted on their site. The missions range from paying it forward by paying for someone else’s order, giving someone a lift, or posting words of encouragement via social media.

No act of kindness or contribution is too small. Even a smile can turn someone’s life around. I know it can be overwhelming to think about, but you can give back and spread joy in whatever way you are most comfortable. I use my blog to give back. I’ve given back to several charities using the proceeds from my clients and partnerships. I volunteer my time by taking on extra work to be able to give back to my community.

Last year, I was able to give to several causes, support friends’ missions, do a diaper drop off to family services, and earn a grant towards the rebuild of one of our local playgrounds. As a mom of three, introvert, and owner of a business that never sleeps, I tailor my giving around my lifestyle.

Whether you’re looking to donate your time or resources with one of the many organizations this holiday season, there’s never been a better time to get your feet wet with good works; Create the Good gives you the necessary tools and information to get started!

Happy Giving!
