Thanksgiving Dinner Well Under $50

022

Thanksgiving is less than two weeks away and I am super excited. Two weeks ago, I was in a panic, but lets not talk about that. Although we’re spending this Thanksgiving with our parents, I’m cooking turkey, dressing, smothered cabbage, homemade crescent rolls, sweet potato pie, pumpkin pie, and caramel cake to have at home. Walmart challenged me to get all of my Thanksgiving fixins for under $50. Since I’m only cooking for the three of us, it wasn’t that hard. It also helps that quite a few of the ingredients that I’ll need this Thanksgiving are already in our cupboard and freezer.

Thanksgiving Shopping List

Turkey – $9.62 (68¢/lb)
Self Rising Flour – $2.00
Cornmeal – $2.08
2 Heads of Cabbage – $5.22
Smoked Bacon – $2.98
Organic Celery – $2.78
Sweet Potatoes – $1.77 (28¢/lb rollback in some stores)
Swanson Chicken Broth – 2 for $1 (rollback)
Dry Yeast – $3.26
Evaporated Milk – $0.78
Parsley – $0.78
Pie Pumpkin – $0.80
Total: $33.07

Shopping Tips

Use leftovers for future meals – There’s nothing like eating Thanksgiving left overs. They taste THAT much better once they’ve sat a day or two. I usually pick the turkey to the bone after Thanksgiving. I’ll freeze whatever we don’t eat (if we don’t) for soup.

Use what’s in the cupboard – Try creating side dishes using what you already have. Fight the urge to try new recipes that call for too many ingredients!

Bake those sweets at home – Do not get tempted by the $14 caramel cakes. Bake one yourself!

By spending well under $50 for our Thanksgiving meal, we’re able to put what we saved towards Christmas. We’re going to be surprising Jayden with a bedroom makeover. Hopefully we can get him to sleep in there!

What are you cooking up this Thanksgiving and how much do you plan on spending? What do you plan to do with the money you save?
