DIY Autumn Yard Sign Using Dollar Tree + Cricut Explore

Hey y’all hey!

Tis the season for all things crafty and I’m happy to share my first project as an official Cricut Influencer! Cricut is a brand I’ve admired and have secretly wanted to work with. I’ve been busy setting up spaces in my home that would allow me to be more creative and bring more DIYs to the blog. My mindset has been set on “getting ready” for the life I truly want and the opportunities that come along with that. I set up a crafting corner to prepare for all of the fun projects I wanted to FINALLY create this fall-winter as an outlet. So when Cricut reached out to me to partner, I knew that my nesting was in preparation for this very moment. *happy dance*

Before

So for my first project using the Cricut Explore Air 2, I decided to continue decorating our outdoor space with an autumn yard sign unique to our family and color scheme. This project started with a yard sign that I picked up at Dollar Tree. All it took was a can of spray paint and Cricut-cut vinyl to transform this playful sign into something a little more classy and custom. I’m SO obsessed with the final result! With the sign, I peeled off the top paper layer (it lifts when wet) and spray painted the entire sign with two coats of spray paint.

I grew all of the mini pumpkins. 🙂

Using the Cricut grid system as a guide, I measured my yard sign and created a 12×12 design in Photoshop. I uploaded the file to Cricut Design Space and had my design cut to vinyl in under two minutes. My Cricut Explore is connected via Bluetooth so sending my work to the machine is super easy. Cricut Design Space also very easy to use. It’s pretty hard to mess up since Design Space guides you through the process.

After cutting the vinyl, I had to do some minor weeding inside of the letters. I just removed those pieces with my fingers with no problem. I’m going to pick up some weeding tools, but something tells me that I’ll probably continue using my hands, lol. After weeding the vinyl, I applied transfer tape over the design, then cut the pieces to be applied to my yard sign. Transfer tape is a MUST when you’re working with intricate cuts longer than three inches or so.

I thought I was going to peel off my little vinyl pieces and apply them like stickers. Nope! I don’t know what I was thinking, but the vinyl kept getting stuck to my fingers. I had to hang my head in shame and order some transfer tape because I knew better… #mombrain. The application of adhesive vinyl will be difficult unless the vinyl is cut into a solid shape like the pumpkin and leaf in my design. Those were very easy to apply and didn’t require transfer tape.

After applying the vinyl to the sign, it was ready for a photo shoot outside. P.S. I did a separate cut of the leaf when I realized I had room on the third row. I also went over the entire sign with a clear coat of spray paint to protect it from outdoor elements. I’m so happy with how this project turned out. I can’t wait to make another one for the holidays!

Everything looks so great!! I'm completely intimidated by the Circut & still long for the simpleness of the Cuddle Bug. Great job!! :-)

This is such a good idea. I want a cricut! I want to make stuff for the house and shirts for my grandkids. I just don't know everything I need to start.
