Holiday 2011 In Photos

This post is entirely too late (just like last year’s post), but in order for me to get back into the swing of things, I need to post it. If I don’t, it’ll continue to bug me. So here it is, some photos from the holiday. No captions because I’m mysterious like that and I don’t want to make photo sharing harder than what it really should be. Plus it’s getting late and I’m hungry. Just keeping it real. {more photos on Flickr}

Hello 2012, Goodbye 2011, and Resolutions

January 3, 2012 · Blogging · 5 comments

On New Year’s day, I decided to brighten things up a bit here on Sophistishe. Refresh if you haven’t been blasted with hot pink goodness. Since Google Friend Connect is going away, I’ve decided to start a newsletter. Please subscribe and I promise not to go buck wild on the emails! I named the newsletter Sheena Tatum’s E-Bits, which I think is so lame, but it’s the first thing that came to mind. It’s little roadblocks like these that keep me from accomplishing things. So I rolled with it. I can change it later. I’ve also integrated my BlogFrog Community ... CONTINUE READING THIS POST →

The Guilt of Christmas Present Overload

December 21, 2011 · Parenting · 2 comments

In early September, I started preparing Jayden’s wishlist to ensure that his presents were bought and wrapped in advance to avoid the hectic last minute. So I made a list. And it was hard at first because he hadn’t asked for anything and was content with what he had. So I began to add items based on his interests. Since quite a few people contribute to Jayden’s gifts, I found myself adding things just to add them… so everyone could equally contribute (they are happy to) and then I found myself deleting away. It was just too much. I started ... CONTINUE READING THIS POST →

Spending the Holidays With a House Full of Family

Earlier this month I shared my favorite holiday tradition. And that’s spending Christmas day with a house full of my mother’s side of the family. There’s no amount of snow, gifts, or holiday decor that can trump that. Our recent trip to NY earlier this month gave me a taste of that. Everyone wasn’t there, but it sure was a housefull there to celebrate the week of my uncle’s birthday. One of those days, my aunts (and great cousin) decided to cook up some gumbo and cakes. We had dinner at the table and my aunts and uncles gave my ... CONTINUE READING THIS POST →

Winter is…

Snow on our front screen door...

Hearing the high winds and snow as it dusts the windows like so and opening the door in the morning and finding that it will only open halfway and stepping outside in your favorite around-the-house sweater and slippers to capture the aftermath Gazing at holiday lights at night and the fluffy snow that complement them Pulling out the cookie press and sprinkles to bake edible delights Decorating the banister and hanging the stockings (This year we have real garland!) Not feeling obligated to leave the house because you couldn’t get out even if you tried Custom knit hats and drippy ... CONTINUE READING THIS POST →

Christmas Traditions I Remember

December 1, 2011 · Life & Quirks · 11 comments

As I head out to visit family this week for a celebration, I think about past Christmases we had together… when I was a little girl. I remember Christmas dinners at my grandmother’s house and my mother’s house. House full of people. Local family and family from out of town. One of my uncle’s would tease me and say, “Uh oh! Uh oh! Here come trouble!” I would get so riled up at him! Another one of my uncles would ask me my where my red glaces (saying glasses in a silly way) were. My mom’s family has a slue ... Creating Thanksgiving Memories

Thanksgiving is… next. week. Where has the time gone? This week, I shopped for Thanksgiving dinner without even giving the actual date much thought. Usually, I cook our meal and freeze it before visiting family for the holiday. I enjoy cooking up a meal and it’s always great to have backup because leftover plates don’t last very long. We like to eat until we can’t eat no more. No limits. No remorse. This year, we plan on spending the earlier part of Thanksgiving Day at my mother’s house where a few family members will stop by. Then, we will spend ... CONTINUE READING THIS POST →

This is the way I shop for coats.

When shopping for a coat, many factors are taken into consideration. When looking for a coat, what matters most to me is that first and foremost, it’s warm. I choose a coat based on thickness, insulation, and length. I am passed the age where I feel the need to look cute, leaving my behind exposed to the wind. Shivering does not = cute. So a coat has to cover my bum. I don’t wear hats and scarves all of the time, so I always look for a coat with a nice hood. Living in the Snowbelt/Windy City, you need a ...
