Are you among the millions of coffee drinkers across the US? Whether you love it for the taste, the many health benefits, or need it for that boost of energy, your day simply isn’t right without a fresh cup of Joe. While you may be convinced that the only way to get the best coffee is to head to a nearby cafe or fast food establishment to get your day started right, the reality is, it can get pretty expensive. A better alternative would be to make it at home.

Some might frown at the idea of having to make their own coffee at home, but it’s a lot easier than you think. With a few tricks of the trade, you could save a ton of money and still enjoy your favorite beverage each morning. Check it out below:

Choose the Right Coffee

The perfect coffee drinking experience at home starts with the best roasts and a french press coffee. You can’t possibly expect to reap all the benefits and indulge in coffee’s rich taste with instant or outdated coffee sitting in your pantry. You’ve got to be willing to invest in your experience. So, start by deciding which roasts are your favorite. There are many different types and brands to choose from, so take your time in deciding. Brands like La Colombe make it easy for coffee drinkers to narrow down the types they’re most interested in. From strong and hearty to sweet and subtle, you’ll find an array of roast types to choose from. Order a few of each to determine which brews you enjoy most.

Store it Properly

Now that you’ve decided which roasts are your preferred drinks of choice, the next step to leveling up your experience is storing it properly. Once the beans have been exposed to oxygen (i.e. once you open the package) it begins to deteriorate changing in taste, potency, and flavor. Therefore, you should invest in secure containers to store your grounds between each use. Some of the best options are tightly-sealed plastic storage containers or glass mason jars.

Grind it Yourself

To get the best tasting coffee to taste even better it is highly recommended that you grind your own beans. That means purchasing a coffee grinder. Though there are plenty of options out there, the best is often derived from a burr grinder. They grind the beans consistently and evenly for a quick and easy brew. You can purchase an automatic or manual grinder depending on your budget.

Use the Right Water

The beans aren’t the only thing that makes a cup of coffee taste great. You also need the right water. This means steering clear of tap water which can have its own strange taste from chlorine, rust, or lime. It is instead recommended that you use filtered or spring water to brew your coffee. It’s also important to point out that the temperature of water (198 to 202 degrees) should be ideal as the hotter the water is the more flavor it is able to extract from the beans. If you prefer ice coffee, of course, simply pour the hot beverage over some ice, stir, and enjoy.

Decide on a Brewing Process

There are several ways to make a cup of coffee. Be that as it may, the process in which it is made can have a positive and/or negative effect on the drinking experience. If you want a good cup of Joe, it would probably be best to steer clear of the microwaving method with instant grounds. Better brewing options would be to invest in a high-quality coffee maker, a french press, or use the pour-over method.

Measure Properly

The amount of coffee used when preparing a good cup is essential to taste and experience. Too much could leave a tart and unpleasant taste in your mouth while too little is pretty much a waste. Though you may have to do some playing around to determine how much is needed to meet your personal preferences, the recommended amount is at least two level teaspoons of coffee grounds for every 6 ounces of water.

Stop spending all of your hard-earned money on coffee from expensive cafes and fast-food restaurants by making your own coffee at home. Though it may seem like a lot, once you’ve found your favorite brand, the right storage containers, and decided on the type of water and brewing process you’re most comfortable with, you’ll find that it’s fairly easy to create the perfect cup of joe to start your day off right.
