Art Every Day: Repurposed Crayons

While doing my Thanksgiving cooking last Sunday, I decided to get a little crafty. We had done some serious house tidying since we were toddler-free. I had been picking up broken crayons from every nook of the house. Frustrated, I began tossing them in the trash. Quite often, I tend to start tossing things that become a problem (physical & virtual). I caught myself, though, dug the crayons out the waste basket and set the rest of the broken crayons I gathered aside for an easy DIY project.

Greg peeled the paper off of the broken crayons for me and I sorted them to be placed in one of my (greased) Wilton silicone molds. I then, popped them in the oven (for about 10min at 350 degrees) while the pies were baking. Not only was I repuposing, I was conserving energy! Aha!

After the crayons had melted enough, I removed them from the oven and let them cool in the freezer. I then removed them from the freezer and carefully popped each new crayon out of the mold. I placed the new crayons in a giftbox and will be surprising Jayden with his new “crununs” (crayons) soon!

Repurposed Crayons

I think these would make great stocking stuffers for Christmas. Just grab a few boxes of inexpensive crayons and place them in Christmas molds. Whaddaya say?

Obviously, I suck at monthly memes.

I made these yesterday in a non-stick mini muffin tin. They turned out great! My tip is to use an exacto knife to slice the paper all the way down the crayon. It definitely saved my thumb nails.

Ouch! My Thumbs hurt from peeling the paper off old crayons. Recommend using a nice veggie peeler if you are having trouble getting the wrappers off. At least to get them started. =) Can't wait to see how they turn out!
