Keeping Baby’s Teeth Clean and Cavity Free

Hello Products has provided me to with product to facilitate this review, along with compensation for my time and effort in creating this content. As always, all opinions are my own.

Many parents still believe that baby teeth aren’t a big deal because they will eventually fall out and be replaced by permanent ones, this, however, couldn’t be further from the truth. Aside from helping baby talk and chew, baby teeth are vital to preserving space for the permanent teeth that will grow in. Not taking care of baby teeth can lead to decay and gum infection which can eventually lead to affecting their permanent teeth. Caring for your baby’s teeth should begin as soon as they start growing in, but don’t fret, it’s not as hard as you may think.

After every feeding, take a wet, warm washcloth and lightly wipe off baby’s gums. To help keep their teeth clean and cavity-free as they’re growing in, never let your little one go to bed with a bottle of milk or juice. A baby nursing on their bottle for a long period of time can lead to cavities due to the sugar that lingers from their drink. After baby is finished drinking, remove the bottle from their sleep space and proceed to wipe the residue off of their gums. Also, be sure to give your baby a drink of water after every meal to easily wash food off of their gums and teeth.

By the age of two, all of your child’s baby teeth will most likely have grown in. It’s definitely time to start brushing twice a day. Make sure to use a soft, but sturdy toothbrush to clean your baby’s teeth and a rice-sized portion/smear of toothpaste on the brush if using a fluoride toothpaste for a child under 3 years of age. You can use a more generous amount if using a non-fluoride toothpaste. There are several toothpastes formulated for babies. We personally enjoy Hello.

Being that we are about that crunchy life, we love buying natural toothpastes for the kids and have actually started doing the same for ourselves. For several months, Hello has been our toothpaste of choice for the entire family. All of their toothpastes are free of dyes, parabens, artificial sweeteners, triclosan, and microbeads. They also offer flouride-free options, which we are currently using on baby Akilah’s teeth.

Since babies are more likely to swallow toothpaste, brushing with a fluoride free toothpaste until the age of 3 is recommended. Excessive swallowing of fluoride can make babies sick. For this reason, there are even smaller amounts of fluoride in children’s toothpastes today, but it’s still our responsibility as parents to monitor fluoride intake.

In addition to practicing good brushing habits, it’s also important to start establishing a relationship between your baby and a dentist. The American Dental Association and The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that a baby should get their first dental exam at the age of 1 or when their first tooth begins to grow in. This is something that’s on our to-do as our pediatrician recently reminded us to set up an appointment.

Taking good care of your baby’s first set of teeth can ensure good oral health in your child from infancy and beyond. Hello makes it easy.

It is very important to take care of our baby's teeth. I made sure to take good care of our son's teeth when he was a baby and it totally paid off because he made it a habit and now that he's a teen, he's got a nice set of teeth.

We have not tried this brand yet. I have tried to keep my kids on a strict scheduled at bedtime, which includes brushing teeth.

I was considering using the Hello brand for my kids! I'm all about clean teeth and teaching my kids how to properly clean those white pearls of theirs : )
