Make Ahead Frozen Smoothies

Over the last year, I think I’ve hit a record high on how many times I’ve been sick. It has just been ridiculous. I never get sick. Like ever. But I’m the one to blame. I’m guilty of multiple counts of self neglect. The self care struggle is real over here. When looking at my diet over the past year, I recollect multiple stress-induced junk food binges and a serious lack of fruits and vegetables.

I’ve been brainstorming on how to get more fruits and veggies into my diet. I thought about doing a salad challenge where I would try to eat a salad three times a week, but I realize that I’m not disciplined enough to re-up on produce every week. I needed a fail-proof solution to my lazy ways, so I decided that frozen smoothies were the answer. *cue dramatic heavenly music*

I perused the grocery store for my favorite vegetables and leafy greens. I grabbed some pineapples, apples, bananas, strawberries, and spinach. I brought them home and got to chopping. Frozen fruits can be hard on blenders, so I made sure to chop everything nice and small.

I placed equal amounts of each fruit and vegetable in several 1qt Ziploc® brand Storage Bags to be frozen. (I recommend using Ziploc® Freezer Bags, but I used the Storage Bags since that’s what I had on hand.) Each morning, I can grab a bag from the freezer and blend into a delicious smoothie within minutes. The type of liquid I add to them will vary between coconut milk and juice. I also plan to add chia and flax seeds to the mix. I see myself getting creative with ingredients… the possibilities are endless!

I’m so happy to have a system that’ll help me make healthier choices. I’ve been interested in make ahead meals lately, so I see more freezer meals on the horizon. Of course more meals, means more Ziploc bags. Having to use so many usually leads to feelings of guilt, so I usually reuse them when I can. However, when I no longer can reuse the bags, I recycle them.

That’s right. Ziploc® brand bags are recyclable! Many stores now accept clean and dry Ziploc® bags. Stores that have bins for plastic bags are now accepting clean and dry Ziploc bags. How’s that for sustainability? How many times do you reuse Ziploc bags before pitching them? Will you start recycling them now?

I always reuse my bags! I prep smoothie stuff in advance too and I use the bags over and over. I generally only use them for the same types of foods, I won't put veggies in a bag that previously had meat. You probably could, I personally never do though. It saves me so much money on bags though.
