It feels like just yesterday I was sewing Juicy’s costume and making Howl-O-Ween treat bags for the pooches in our family. This year is going by THAT fast. I always love creating this time of the year so there’s no way I could pass up the opportunity to share some Halloween goodies with you guys and gals. I chose candied apples as this year’s sweet treat. They are so much fun for little kiddos and they are fairly easy to make… well air quotes on “easy”.
I almost threw in the towel on these, but I felt like it was my duty to inform the world how NOT to make candied apples. See, I failed miserably with my first batch. The caramel would not stay on the dang apples and I dropped them while removing them from the freezer. It was a fail of epic proportions. The disaster left me distraught sending my poor husband to Walmart for more apples and caramel bits. I HAD to produce something pretty quick, fast, and in a hurry because my time for content creation is so very limited these days. That’s life as a mama of three… or a two-year old and newborn combo or all of the above. *cue the screams of horror*
Anyway. I hope you all enjoy this sweet tutorial and don’t make the same mistake that I did! Heed my advice and let that caramel cool off and thicken first!
- 5 large apples
- 1 (11oz) bag of caramels
- Assorted sprinkles
- Lollipop Sticks
- Melon baller
- Peel each apple if you prefer. Using a melon baller, carve as many circles as you can out of each of the apples. Pat the apples dry and insert lollipop sticks, roundest side of the apple up. Set aside on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper or foil.
- In a small saucepan, melt the caramel over low heat, stirring until completely melted. Let the melted caramel cool down a bit. Pour sprinkles into dipping bowls.
- Once the caramel has thickened a bit, begin dipping the apples, slowly rotating the stick to evenly coat each apple. Dip and rotate each caramel apple in a bowl of sprinkle immediately after. Return apples to baking sheet and place in freezer to let the caramel and sprinkles set.
