Painting The Living And Play Rooms

Painting a Room For Dummies As you all can probably tell, I am really into DIY projects. There’s so many projects around the house I’ve been itching to tackle, painting being one of them. White walls are depressing and suck the life out of me, so I HAVE to paint walls to create happy zones. I had the opportunity to create another happy zone in my home when Walmart asked me to beta test their Projects Made Simple DIY video tutorials. The step-by-step tutorials are super easy to understand, they even recommend products to help you on your way. I chose to follow the how to paint a room tutorial. I’ve been painting rooms for a while, so the tutorial was pretty much a refresher. The instructor did mention some things that I usually don’t do; using a sanding pad and washing the walls before painting. I do check for cobwebs at the very least, though :-). The video below shows Greg and I painting our living and play rooms from start to finish. The most difficult task was taping everything up. I felt like we were taping forever! The joys of painting.

In the video and photos you may notice some craziness like the brown curtains layering over the white curtains in the before shots. Greg knocked them over and put them back on backwards. Also one of the couches is missing a slipcover in the after because it ripped so bad, there was no way I was putting it back on. Hopefully our new slipcovers will be arriving this week! I didn’t put the Super Mario Bros. stickers back up in the play room because I want to put a bookcase or cubes in there and I don’t want to end up covering up some of the stickers. Oh, I also put up some pretty dandelion stickers by the slipcoverless couch. The naked space was driving me nuts.

The paint colors used are Calm Misty Sea and Frozen Praline by Color Place. Color Place is supposed to be medium quality compared to BHG and Glidden, but since we’ll only be living in our rental for 2 more years at the most, it’ll suffice. I wish I had gone a shade darker for both colors, but overall I am pleased. It’s amazing what a fresh coat of paint will do to a room, especially one once sterile and full of scuffs and little hand prints :-).

I’m impressed with your project results! My latest project was to paint all of the sinks in our bathrooms with Giani paint. They came out really nice although I wish I would have chosen a different color for the downstairs bathroom. Oh well, at least it’s so much easier to keep it looking clean now!

We really need to paint the inside, outside, and pool deck of our new home! The little projects come first though – like unpacking!

I have a hallway filled with paint cans waiting to be splashed on the walls in my house. My school courseload sort of got in the way of my renovations that needed to be done the summer I moved in. Hopefully I can get everything done this summer. I’ve come a long ways, though.

I love the colors that you have chosen. It definitely makes the room more inviting and it reminds me of a theme I saw when I was in Pensacola in a beach house/condo. Those are nice warm colors that can also be used with dark colors as well. It’s definitely a color I plan on using for my bathroom. I started with a beige color and I don’t really like it. I generally use Glidden that has the paint and primer in one, and also eggshell. I’ve used Color Place, which I think is a great brand when you use two coats over a dark color.

Is the satin finish really shiny? I’m painting our kitchen and living area this summer and would prefer not to use the semi gloss finish. I find it to be too shiny.

I’m going to be moving soon and one of the things I can’t wait to do is paint. I’m not really huge on a lot of colors so I primarily stick to white but I do plan on giving each room a little bit of color…
