Ginger – Ginger is a known remedy for inflammation, rheumatic disorders, and gastrointestinal illness. Ginger’s pungent phenolic substances known as, gingerols, have antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-tumor activities. A recent study in Korea found that gingerol is a potent inhibitor of tumor angiogenesis.

Cabbage – Cabbage and all vegetables in the cruciferous family (bok choy, kale, Brussels sprouts, broccoli, cauliflower), contain glucosinolates responsible for flavor, but most importantly potent chemo-preventive and anti-angiogenic agents.

Tomatoes – Eating tomatoes can protect skin against sun damage and inhibit cancer cells. Tomatoes are high in lycopene, a potent plant pigment and antioxidant.

Hot Peppers – Capsaicin, responsible for the heat in hot green and red peppers contain have been found to suppress the growth of new blood vessels that feed cancer. Capsaicin inhibited blood vessel growth in a number of standard laboratory tests for angiogenesis in the study.

Pumpkin – Pumpkin is rich in carotenoids which have been shown to decrease the risk of various cancers, including those of the lung, colon, bladder, cervical, breast, and skin. Studies have found that women with the highest concentrations of carotenes in their diets had the lowest risk of breast cancer.

But there’s still more work to be done as hundreds of research studies went unfunded while 577,000 Americans died of cancer this year. Cancer thrives on silence and complacency and only action will finish the fight.
