Cold, Cough, & Flu Prevention & Remedies

During Christmas, we all got hit with a bug. Jayden had come down with it on Christmas Eve and then a few days later, the rest of us had it including baby Jax. Although Jaxon was a champ, managing a household of sickies (little ones at that) while being sick was rough and worrisome. I don’t want to travel back down that road anytime soon.

Sometimes, of course, we can be caught off guard as a new strain makes it’s way into town, but there are things we can do for prevention and quick treatment. Here’s a list of general things we are doing to help prevent and soothe cold and flu symptoms.


1. Keep up with the weather and dress accordingly. We’ve had quite a few days of unpredictable weather. One day, it would be warm enough for hoodies, then cold enough for Eskimo coats the next. This is what I refer to as pnemonia weather. Bundle up – absolutely no shorts!


2. Sanitize hands and items/surfaces that come in contact with the public. With all of the bugs going around, it’s so important to keep hands sanitized and anything numerous people have come in contact with such as shopping carts. Tea tree oil is a natural disinfectant and can be added to water and hand soap to sanitize.

3. Start remedies just in case. If you’ve come in contact with someone who is sick or if you think you MAY be coming down with something, start remedies to nip any bugs in the bud. If I feel the slightest tickle in my throat, I have some echinacea tea on the spot.


1. Eat and drink warm liquids. Not only is staying hydrated important while feeling ill, but warm liquids help soothe a sore throat and fight bacteria. Chicken soup with lots of onions and garlic are ideal as well as hot tea with echinacea, ginger, lemon and honey.

2. Breath in steam. Steam helps soothe a stuffy nose and as well as loosen mucous. When Jax was sick, I ran the shower on hot for 15 minutes and it helped the mucous run, making it easy to remove using the nose aspirator.

3. Take natural cough suppressants. I don’t like to drug Jayden up when he’s sick, so he takes natural cough syrups whenever he’s sick and most recently a night time drink we discovered by Zarbee’s.
