Holiday Gift Ideas That Give Back

The holiday will be here in a week and I know some of you are still shopping… perhaps wondering what to give a person who seems to have everything. How about giving a gift that gives back? Here are some gifts that you may want to consider giving as they make great conversation pieces and encourage the spirit of giving.

Hand-Carved Serving Spoons at World Vision

These beautiful serving spoons are made to benefit orphans of the Kamba tribe in Kenya. Each one is unique, just like the children they help. With your gift of $65 or more to the Maximum Impact Fund, which provides for the unique needs of children and families worldwide,  you will receive this beautiful set of two hand-carved serving spoons delivered in a gift bag of African fabric hand-sewn by local women.

Paper Beaded Jewelry at 1000 Shillings

Each gorgeous piece of jewelry sold through 1000 Shillings helps women establish a small business, which enables her to support her family. 1000 Shillings is different from most fair trade companies, because the women artisans earn capital for their own small businesses by making limited-edition products for 1000 Shillings… the average a woman in the Namatala slum lives on per day ($0.40). 1000 Shillings currently work with six single mothers in the Namatala slum of Uganda; Aidah, Annette, Veronica, Esther, Martha, and Elizabeth.

Rwanda Basket Collection at Macy’s

From fair wages and HIV/AIDS care, to the spirit of hope and reconciliation fostered by the weavers, the impact of the Path to Peace project is no longer measured by individuals but by whole communities. These beautiful one-of-a-kind baskets are designed to improve lives and enhance yours, putting real, sustainable income into the hands of the women who weave them. Hand-woven baskets are made with naturally dyed sisal coil-sewn over bundled sweetgrass. Artisans receive half the wholesale price for each item sold.

I am a voluntary member of the Global Team of 200 which 1000 Shillings is a client of. I also received samples from Macy’s (3 years ago) and World Vision, but I share these gifts to genuinely help others.

Those baskets are gorgeous! Gifts with a conscious are fantastic even if you give them to yourself (I can totally see those baskets in my office!). Thank you for sharing!

I know, right? I've had a basket for years and have been using it to decorate the kitchen. I won't be using the spoons either... they're too beautiful!
